2015 was the International Year of Soils. Our soil provides the basis of life. It takes 1,000 years to generate just 3 cm of top soil. At current rates of soil nutrient depletion, the world’s top soil could vanish within 60 years. Source: United Nations
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Soil nutrients can be replenished through the collection and composting of food waste. By utilizing this method, we can reduce greenhouse gases and protect the health of our soil.
I AM THE SOIL. YOU TREAT ME LIKE DIRT.
WHAT IS GENERACYCLE DOING?
GeneraCycle developed the Closed Loop Vermicompost Program. An award-winning program by which food waste is composted using worms. This Program diverts food waste from going to landfill, and returns nutrients back to where they belong, the soil.
When food waste is improperly disposed and enters a landfill, this robs future soils of the nutrients which they once extracted. Burying waste is simply not a natural system, and the planet is incapable of processing any waste, compost or otherwise in this unnatural way.
Through the GeneraCycle Closed Loop Vermicompost Program, GeneraCycle customers capture the financial benefit of carbon credits, as well as, a further economic value which comes from the commodity of soil. GeneraCycle demonstrates we can have economic and environmental sustainability together. The reality is that the planet has already been recycling compost in this way for millions of years, and to protect the longevity of our species, we must ensure it continues.
